I remember seeing him speak once from the balcony of the County Hotel in Durham City at the Miners “Big Day Out” Gala one year in my distant youth.
An erudite, principled decent man and whilst I disagreed in the main with his socialist politics he was a great parliamentarian and a staunch opponent of the European Union.
He’d get my vote……
